Who founded Sandwell and what is the story behind it? Sandwell was founded in 2023 by Andy Gottlieb, a French Culinary Institute-trained chef and restaurateur with over 20 years in NYC's hospitality industry. Andy opened Sandwell on the Upper West Side after searching — and failing to find — a sandwich shop that was genuinely deliciously & healthyish, so he had to open it himself instead.
What makes Sandwell different from other NYC sandwich shops? Sandwell bakes its own semolina bread in-house daily, cold-proofed for 24+ hours. All proteins are baked, never fried. Sauces, dressings, and spreads are made from scratch. There's no red meat, no butter, no cream, and no preservatives — just incredibly delicious food that happens to be good for you.
Where are Sandwell's locations? Sandwell has two locations in New York City: 412 Amsterdam Avenue on the Upper West Side and 250 3rd Avenue in Gramercy (opened in 2025). But check back soon because more are on the way.
